Costa Coffee is With You

For the latest updates from us see below

24 July 2020

This week marks four months since we closed over 2,600 of our Costa Coffee stores and as ever, all of us here at Costa Coffee hope you and your family and friends are well.

When we closed our stores back in March, we quickly started work on how we could safely re-open in line with Government guidelines, ensuring that any changes would keep both our store teams and customers safe. We’ve made a lot of changes to our stores and how we serve our coffee, introducing social distancing and enhancing our hygiene procedures. Customers are telling us that they feel safe when visiting and are delighted that we’re open. You can read more about the safety changes we have made here.

We wanted to share with you some additional information about what to expect when eating-in at a Costa Coffee and how you can now enjoy your favourite Costa for less.

Our stores

  • We have successfully re-opened over 2,000 stores, with over 1,700 of those stores offering an eat-in option for customers. Check here for a list of stores re-opening their eat-in seating areas

  • Customers will be seated by a team member on a first come, first serve basis and we have changed the layout of our seating areas in stores to accommodate social distancing

  • Those customers opting to eat-in will be asked to provide contact details via a QR code using your phone as part of the Government’s Track and Trace programme

  • In line with UK Government guidelines we will be asking all customers who can, to wear a face covering whilst in a Costa store in England. Those customers opting to eat-in can remove their face covering when sat at a table consuming their food and drink

  • If you are ordering a Costa to take away from your local store or looking to enjoy a delivery, we have hundreds of stores offering a mobile ordering service from our app or delivery via Uber Eats.

Our prices

  • Following the Chancellor’s VAT reduction, we have passed on the saving to our customers across food and drink in all Costa Coffee owned stores. Customers can also get the saving on our Costa Express machines

  • We have opted in to the Government’s ‘Eat Out To Help Out’ Scheme and from 3 -31 August, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, hundreds of participating Costa Coffee stores will be applying the 50% discount on all food and drink items up to a total value of £10 per person when they choose to eat in store. This discount will be applied in addition to the VAT reduction across all food and drink.

  • Finally, in July we treated everyone with our app to a free coffee by giving away 300 points. The promotion may be over, but you still have 12 months to spend your points on a treat in store!

It has been an unprecedented four months and I am hugely grateful for the ongoing hard work and support of the Costa team, our baristas, partners and suppliers who have enabled us to return safely to High Streets, towns and cities up and down the country. Finally, thank you also to our customers, for your patience and support as we all learn to adapt to the new way of serving Costa coffee. We look forward to seeing you in store soon.

Thank you and take care.

CEO, Costa Coffee

We are delighted to be slowly and safely re-opening a number of our stores for eat-in, allowing customers the option to sit in a store and enjoy their favourite hand-crafted Costa Coffee.

In line with strict government guidelines, we’ve amended how we serve customers choosing to eat-in, ensuring the safety of both customers and team members. We will be operating on a first come, first service basis, with limited seating to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Please check here for a list of stores re-opening their eat-in seating areas.

All of us here at Costa Coffee hope you and your family and friends are well and that you are beginning to enjoy more of your local High Streets and town centres re-opening.

We thought we would give you an update on what we have been up to over the past few weeks. We have successfully re-opened over 650 Costa Coffee stores, including all our Drive-Thru lanes. Today (18 June) we re-open another 164 takeaway stores, which means that by the end of June we will have 1,100 stores re-open.

The safety of our store team members and customers remains our number one priority and for those yet to visit a newly re-opened takeaway store, they will look and feel quite different:

  • The number of customers entering a store at one time will be restricted depending on the store size.

  • Clear floor signage will ask customers to support all social distancing guidelines when queuing both inside and outside the store.

  • Once inside there will be a hand sanitiser station for customers to use and only one customer will be allowed to the counter at a time, which have been fitted with Perspex screens.

  • To maintain a contactless service, we currently only accept contactless payment and won’t be able to accept physical Coffee Club cards. Customers can still collect and redeem loyalty points using the Costa app.

  • We are accepting reusable cups in stores and rewarding those customers with a 25p discount on any handcrafted drink.

As we continue to re-open more stores, we also continue to help those keeping the country moving. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be delivering thousands of Costa Coffee Ready-To-Drink cans to key workers, providing them with a well-deserved coffee break.

A huge thank you, as ever, to our store teams, helping us to safely re-open and welcome customers back. Thank you also to our customers, for your patience and support as we all learn to adapt to the new way of serving Costa coffee. We look forward to welcoming more of you back into our stores soon for a great cup of coffee!

All of us here at Costa Coffee hope you and your family and friends are well and looking forward to another long-weekend. Over the past four weeks, in line with Government guidelines, we are pleased to have successfully re-opened over 70 Costa Coffee stores. To keep our store teams and customers safe, we’ve made a lot of changes to how we serve our coffee, introducing social distancing and enhancing our hygiene procedures. Customers are telling us that they feel safe when visiting and are delighted that we’re open.

Our store teams have responded well to our new ways of working, which has given us confidence that we can re-open more stores. Over next two weeks we are re-opening all our Drive-Thru lanes*. 75 Drive-Thru lanes will re-open today (21 May) and 58 will re-open on 28 May.

Drive-Thru’s – our Drive-Thru lanes will be open for customers to enjoy a Costa whilst out on a journey.

Takeaway Stores – we will continue to have 18 takeaway stores open throughout May, allowing customers to enter the store and collect a coffee to takeaway.

Delivery – we also have 14 stores open for delivery only. No customers are allowed into the stores but they can order their favourite coffee from the comfort of their own home via Uber Eats, who will deliver.

As part of re-opening our stores, we continue to help support everyone who’s keeping the country moving. Over the past week we have delivered another hundred thousand Ready-to-Drink Costa Coffee cans to key workers, providing a well-deserved coffee break to those working in hospitals, police and fire stations and NHS call centres, to name just a few.

A huge thank you to those team members working, helping us to safely re-open. We look forward to welcoming customers safely back into our stores. To find out which stores are open, and for information on how you can order a Costa delivery via Uber Eats, click here.

*In two weeks from the first drop on 25th March 2020.

Last week we made the decision to re-open two Drive-Thru lanes and two stores for delivery only in line with the latest Government advice. The safety of our team members and customers is our number one priority and ahead of these stores re-opening, we put in place new social distancing guidelines, enhanced hygiene procedures and are providing teams with personal protective equipment. We have been really pleased with how well our stores teams have been able to adapt to our new ways working, allowing us to serve great coffee, as safely as possible. We have also received some great feedback from our customers and key workers taking advantage of enjoying a well-deserved coffee break whilst on essential journeys to or from work.

We will be increasing the number of Drive-Thru lanes and stores open for delivery via Uber Eats from tomorrow (2 May).

Drive-Thru’s – 17 additional Drive-Thru lanes will be open from tomorrow. Whilst open to all customers, they are intended to offer critical and key workers the chance to enjoy a Costa on essential journeys.

Delivery Stores – 12 additional stores will open for delivery only. No customers will be allowed into the stores but they can order their favourite coffee from the comfort of their own home via Uber Eats, who will deliver.

As part of re-opening these additional stores, we are continuing to help support everyone who’s keeping the country moving, delivering thousands of our Ready-to-Drink Costa Coffee cans to key workers near those stores re-opening, including hospitals, police and fire stations and NHS call centres. It’s just one of our small tokens of appreciation to the people out there who are giving so much.

Whilst most of our stores remain closed we continue to pay our store team members 100% pay and are incredibly grateful to those who have volunteered to work across these re-opening stores and to those who have been managing our first four stores this past week. All of us here at Costa Coffee hope you and your family and friends are safe and well. Our number one priority remains the safety of our team members and customers and as we continue to navigate our way through this challenging time, our stores remain temporarily closed.

Over the past four weeks we have managed to keep over 60 stores in hospitals safely open, providing some of our wonderful key workers with a well-earned coffee break. We have also given away over half a million coffees to NHS workers, over a million Ready-to-Drink Costa Coffee cans to key workers and partnered with 35 fantastic food distribution charities and community organisations, including FareShare and Hope Centre, to donate over 21,000 cases of surplus food and drink to those in need. We’ve also provided nearly 8,000 care packages to NHS workers, including those working at the new Nightingale Hospitals. For more information click here.

As we start to look ahead to what the new normal will be, we have made the decision to re-open two Drive-Thru lanes (in Manchester and Mansfield) and two stores (in Manchester and Bristol) this Friday (24 April), all serving a limited menu.

Our two Drive-Thru lanes are both near large hospitals and whilst open to all customers, are intended to offer critical and key workers the chance to enjoy a Costa on essential journeys.

Our two stores will be delivery only, meaning no customers will be allowed in to the stores but can order their favourite coffee from the comfort of their own home via Uber Eats, who will deliver.

As part of reopening these stores, we’ll also be donating an additional 250,000 Ready to-Drink Costa Coffee cans to nearby key workers, including hospitals, police and fire stations and NHS call centres.

Ahead of Friday, we have put in place social distancing guidelines for our teams that align to Government recommendations. We have also enhanced our hygiene procedures and adapted our operations to allow us to serve great coffee, as safely as possible. Some of these changes include only accepting contactless payments, providing teams with personal protective equipment, enhanced cleaning processes and providing designated pick-up points for delivery drivers.

We are incredibly grateful to those store team members who have volunteered to be trained on our new procedures and who will be working across the four stores. To find out which stores are opening and for information on how you can order a delivery via Uber Eats, click here.

Like so many, Costa Coffee wants to thank all NHS workers at the forefront of this current crisis and provide them with a well-deserved coffee break.

Since Saturday, we have proudly given away over 250,000 free drinks to our heroes.

The response has been overwhelming, and as such, team members have found it increasingly hard to follow the social distancing requirements to keep everyone safe. From Wednesday 25th March, Costa will no longer be able to provide free hot drinks. We remain committed to keep serving our heroes as long as possible and so instead, from next week, Costa will be giving away 250,000 of our delicious Ready-To-Drink Costa Coffee cans to NHS workers. We hope they’ll understand that the decision has been made to protect both those key workers and our store teams working within hospitals.

The Ready-To-Drink cans will be delivered to hospitals with a Costa Coffee store in them and given away across several locations, to help us keep everyone safe.

Thank you again to all those NHS heroes and key workers for all the great work you are doing.

Jill McDonald
CEO, Costa Coffee

At Costa Coffee our number one priority is the safety of our store teams and customers. As the need to support social distancing increases, we have taken the decision to temporarily close our stores from this evening, Monday 23 March.

We will do our best to keep Costa stores open in hospitals where we will continue to provide free takeaway coffee for the next two weeks to the NHS workers who are at the forefront of this crisis.

Wherever possible, we will also keep our Costa Express machines available to serve you a great cup of coffee.

Supporting our Store Teams

Our baristas are the heart of our business. During these unprecedented times, we are extremely grateful for the service they have continued to deliver to our customers.

As previously communicated, we will be paying all our store team members, whose store has closed, their full average weekly pay over eight weeks.

Supporting our Communities

Whilst our stores will be closed, our commitment to our communities does not stop.

We have pledged to provide support to those in need over the coming weeks and months, providing food and drink, and allowing our teams to support their own communities locally.

We started last week, providing free coffee to our critical NHS workers. This week we will continue by delivering one million cans of coffee to other key workers across the country.

We will be sharing more information about the other work we’re doing on our website and social media channels. You can find out more here.

Thank You

I want to take this opportunity to thank our store teams, who during a lot of uncertainty over the past few weeks have continued to provide a warm and welcoming environment, and great service to our loyal customers.

To our customers, thank you for your ongoing support – we know these are difficult and unsettling times and through our community work we hope to be able to continue serving you, and your friends and families in some way.

I will continue to be in touch over the coming weeks and look forward to welcoming you back into our stores soon.

Thank you and take care.

Jill McDonald
CEO, Costa Coffee

Our commitment to support our customers, communities and people

As the Nation's Favourite Coffee Shop, we are committed to supporting our customers, our communities and our people in the face of the Coronavirus.

This week we have had to make some drastic, yet necessary changes to the way we serve Costa Coffee from our stores and we thank you for your support and understanding whilst we work through this unprecedented time – we’ve been overwhelmed by how supportive our teams and customers have been.

Following the government announcement this evening, we will continue to offer a take-away only service from our stores. We will also continue to offer a ‘click & collect’ service in 500 stores, and are aiming to increase our Delivery service over the coming days to ensure we can still provide you with a great cup of coffee during these difficult times.

We’d also like to share what else we are doing, to support our communities, our critical NHS workers and our Costa team members.

Our customers – continuing to provide great coffee

Our stores moved to take-away earlier this week, and will remain open for take-away only in line with the Government guidelines.

For those looking to enjoy a Costa Coffee at home, we will continue to deliver drinks and food in partnership with Uber Eats and Deliveroo across selected stores. We are also planning to significantly expand our delivery partnership with Uber Eats over the coming week to ensure we can provide as many homes as possible with handcrafted coffee. We will keep you updated as we extend our delivery service across the UK.

We will also continue to offer a ‘click and collect’ service in over 500 stores across the UK. Simply order drinks and food using our Costa app and pick-up from the store in a contact free way. Download the ‘Costa Coffee app’ here from the App Store to use our mobile ordering service.

Our Costa Express partners also continue, where possible, to operate our machines up and down the country to give you access to barista quality coffee on the go.

Our communities

Costa Coffee will support those in need within local communities. We will be providing food and drink to those who need it most, and allowing our teams to support their own communities.

We are kick starting our community support next week by delivering thousands of Costa Coffee Ready-To-Drink cans to key workers across the Nation.

Our heroes

Like so many, we want to thank those NHS workers at the forefront of this crisis and provide them with a well-deserved coffee break. All coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be free of charge to NHS workers for two weeks from tomorrow. We are fortunate to be present in many hospitals and nearby locations so our heroes won’t have to go far to take us up on our offer.

Just show your NHS badge in any Costa store for your free drink*.

Our people

Our Baristas are the heart of our business and we wouldn’t be who we are without them. We are currently working through the implications of the government’s announcement on wages, but we will continue to honour the commitment we made to our people earlier this week.

We committed to pay our Store Teams full pay for the next 8 weeks, regardless of whether our stores are able to operate or not. Additionally, if our team members are unable to work over the same period due to the impact of COVID-19, including if they are ill, caring for a family member or caring for a child, we have increased our sick pay provisions to support them.

At Costa Coffee, we have never felt prouder to be on every High Street and in every community, supporting our team members, partners and customers.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,
Jill McDonald
CEO, Costa Coffee

*Supporting our NHS workers. One free drink (coffee, tea or hot chocolate) to be provided free of charge on seeing an NHS badge. Only one per day. Offer runs from 21 March 2020 to 4 April 2020.

At Costa Coffee our number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of our team members and customers.

Our Stores

As the Nation's Favourite Coffee Shop, we are committed to providing you with a clean and safe environment. The safety of our customers and our store teams is our number one priority, no more so than when operating in unprecedented times.

As we continue to follow the advice and recommendations from the Government and health authorities, we have made several changes to our stores to help support in social distancing. We know that you will understand we are doing this because we believe it’s the best and safest way to continue to serve great Costa Coffee. Starting from tomorrow (Thursday 19 March):

  • All stores will be cashless and will only accept card payments.

  • All seating areas will be closed for customer use in stores to support government guidance on social distancing, however, our toilets will continue to be open for customers.

  • We will serve all drinks in takeaway cups and food in takeaway packaging, ‘dine-in’ crockery will not be available.

  • We won’t be able to serve you your drink in a reusable cup in our stores but we will honour our 25p discount if you bring in your own cup.

  • All stores will temporarily remove newspapers as we cannot clean them in between each customer handling them.

  • All stores will also have a more limited food range but we will be sure to stock Costa Coffee favourites and make sure we have choice available for all dietary requirements and preferences.

  • All Drive-Thru lanes will remain open as usual for those customers in vehicles but internal seating areas will be closed.

  • Our Costa Express machines continue to operate up and down the country as normal for those customers on-the-go. We continue to work closely with our partners to ensure they maintain the highest standard of cleaning and hygiene.

Our People

To help minimise the spread of the virus, we are following the latest Government recommendations and asking any team member with symptoms to stay home and self-isolate for at least seven days. If a team member lives with someone else and they have symptoms, then we have requested that they stay home and follow the Government recommendations for household isolation.

Whilst some of these changes will feel quite disruptive we believe they are the right thing to do for our customers and store teams. We are especially mindful of the move to takeaway only and ask that customers dispose of and recycle their Costa Coffee packaging responsibly. We will continue to recycle cups and welcome you dropping them back into store, if possible. We thank you in advance for your support and assure you that these changes are temporary and will be regularly reviewed.

These are difficult times and where we can provide a safe and familiar environment in your community, we hope to do so. We will continue to update you through emails, on our website and via our social media channels.

Thank you again for your ongoing support. Keep well.
